Boca's Italian Sausage

More info: Boca

I was very excited to try these, as Italian sausages used to be one of my favorite things to eat. My opinion of Boca's Italian Sausages is mixed.

If you're looking for an alt-sausage that tastes just like real Italian sausages, you're going to be pretty disappointed. I certainly was at first. But, if you take a permanent marker and cross out the word "Italian" on the box, and you just pretend that you bought flavorful and tasty alt-sausage links, you will be pleasantly surprised.

I cooked mine up in the toaster-oven and put it on a bun with some spicy brown mustard. It was quite tasty. I also sliced up a link and mixed it in with some pasta later that night for dinner, and it was a good flavor boost for the sauce.

I would definitely buy these again. I just have to keep reminding myself that they're not going to taste like real Italian sausages.

With mustard? What you need to do is to fry up some onions and sweet green or red peppers, then get some pizza sauce as a topping. You also should have an Italian bread bun or a soft-crust baguette instead of a hot-dog bun. That's my (Italian) opinion of the best way to eat these.
You can also do all of the above except that you remove the bun and slice-up and fry the sausage with the onions and peppers. It can be served as a topping for pasta as well.

I could definitely see myself replacing the mustard with onions and peppers, but I'm not giving up my classic hot-dog bun. ;)

We've been enjoying these for years. We line toasted Italian bread with provolone cheese and add the "sausage", grilled peppers & onions, and sometimes a robust mustard as well.
Yum!
They are not inexpensive though, but we find them on sale every few weeks.
Enjoy!

I really like Boca’s Vegetarian Italian Sausage, but wish there was not so much sodium in it.

I don't know what you are talking about when you claim it doesn't taste like the really thing. I may not have had meat in a long while, but my omnivorous boyfriend has and he claims it tastes like the real deal! I love these sausages, they no longer sell them at my local grocery store, so I have drive 30 minutes to get them, but it is definitely worth it!

Another option I would definitely recommend is the tofurkey brand italian sausages. They taste amazing and are great on a roll or sliced up in pasta with peppers and onions. I can't compare them to these Boca ones since i have been a fan of the tofurkey version from the start.

I think they changed the recipe, because they are definitely the best fake sausage I've ever had. To me it's perfectly spiced and oiled.

I wish I could find the Boca Italian Sausage. We used these in tons of recipes and now can't find then in Jacksonville, FL.

I can't find them from last two months in Dallas, TX either. Anybody knows why?
Digger2042 days ago
These were discontinued at my local grocery store as of two weeks ago, so I wonder if they just don't sell as well as the other veggie stuff. On the plus side, they were reduced to 1.49 for quick sale so I bought all they had. I really like these slow-cooked with sauerkraut and served over mashed potatoes.

Boca is the best veggie Sausage available - I have tried many. Don't waste money on the new MorningStar Farms Italian Sausage. My favorite way to cook Boca Italian is to cut it into coins and fry it in veg oil until it is very brown. Then put the coins into spaghetti sauce. Boca sausage disappeared from my stores too, in Michigan, but I see it is still being promoted on their website along with a "all natural" Italian Sausage.

I agree with the above poster about the new Morningstar Farms Italian Sausage. The taste isn't horrible, but the darn things fall apart so easily it's impossible to handle them. I do like Smart Sausages as an alternative to Boca. They are very similar in taste and texture, but unfortunately they are a lot more expensive.

I can't seem to find boca Italian sausage anywhere and Morningstar Farms Italian Sausage is horrible.
Why would you discontinue someything so good. I' am of Italian desent and no other product can come close to tasting that good

Boca Italian sausage disappears from Los Angeles markets last month. Just called the Boca company and they say they have discontinued their whole sausage line.

I'm upset to read above that Boca has dicontinued its sausage line. My local store still has Boca bratwurst, but the Italian disappeared a while ago. I'm with those who think it's GREAT. I'm part Italian, and find the taste very much like the real thing, as do my meat-eating friends. I slice it and add it to pasta sauce, and it's a hit with everyone. This product made it more fun to be vegetarian.

In an email exchange, BOCA just confirmed that they have discontinued the Italian sausages, which were the absolute favorite BOCA product in my household. (They are fabulous with chopped spinach, for example.) Can anyone recommend something which tastes similar?
Tamara1995 days ago
I don't know of any other vegetarian sausage that even comes close to Boca Bratwurst or Italian Sausages. I've just e-mailed them begging them to bring their them back. Maybe if all us Boca sausage fans inundate them with requests for their sausages, they will consider reinstating them? Can't hurt to try...
Michelina1928 days ago
I just called them and they said they were discontinued in 2008 since not enough people were buying them!
I agree on trying to inundate them with request!
How is it possible that there weren't enough people buying such a good product?

I used to cook them with broccoli rape, in real South Italian style...

I thought to start a facebook group to petition Boca to reconsider their decision on the Boca sausages, and discovered that somebody has already started one.
I joined. IT would be great if we could all join and invite others to join, maybe Boca would realize how many people love that product!

This is the link to the FB group:

No way! Oh my goodness! I have been to every store that I can think of looking for Boca's Italian sausages, no wonder I can't find them. Well, at least now I will be more motivated to find an alternative. I don't much care for Morningstar's brand. BOO!
Edubz1871 days ago
I figured that they stopped making them. They taste better than the tofurkey ones. Can't seem to find morningstar hot dogs anywhere... Tofurkey lunch meat is pretty good..

So does anyone know why they quit making these sausages. They were great!!!!
TonyD1778 days ago
I agree with many of the above comments that the Boca Veggie "Italian" Sausage is the best of the lot - by far! Why don't they make the product anymore when so many of us have gotten "hooked" on it? I'm sure I speak for many of the others posting comments here that we would appreciate an answer from Boca on this.
vincent1738 days ago
do they want to sell the recipe to another company i wonder..such an excellent product..clearly boca didnt have a clue how to market it...

Boca is owned by KRAFT. That should explain much about Boca and their true intentions. F'get about 'em!!!!!!!!

I am disappointed. they were one of my favorites. It seems like a lot of the good veggie products are disappearing from the shelves lately

Morningstar Farms italian sausage were superior in taste to Boca. Yeah the firmness isn't perfect, but the flavor is closer to the real thing.

I love Boca brand Italian sausage! I have been a non-meat eater for 37 years now and when I discovered this product, I fell in love. I could eat like the rest of the family only with my choice alternative.
The problem has arisen that I can no longer find it in any of the grocery stores.
Did Boca quit making this item?
I've even pestered the store managers to re-order with no avail.....

WERE CAN I FIND THESE ITIAN SAUSAGES IN POLK COUNTY FL, I USE TO BUY THEM BUT NOW I CAN'T FIND THEM ANY MORE. I LOVE THESE VEGGIE SAUSAGES.
Alasha Williams987 days ago
it has been discontinued Linda - I like the Morning Star version - hard to find and kinda of pricey.
Alasha Williams987 days ago
Agreed Rey but i never had the Boca. usually Morning star tastes better than Boca. Boca is more affordable. I buy the 12 pack which reasonable only 70 calories ... the flavor leaves much to be desired. lol
